IIRC it's a very high DC component with irregular spikes that contribute to very wide 
spectrum upto few
MHz minimum.

Also lightning is a high power surge. I said power including current and voltage both. 
Estimated values
are 1.2MV @50KA. It jumps like waterfall. It hits a layer of atmosphere as if it's a 
rock, induces very
high ionisation at that altitude, shifts it's direction abruptly and makes another 
jump.

I don't know where did meteorological department of India dig these figures and 
explanation but I would
liek to believe them.

BTW telefone line are supposed to have a BW of 4KHz while experiments(I did 
that...:-)) tell that
300-500Hz are enough to transmit a conversation.
