One reason could be that you not told to ignome the CD-ROM drive for
scsi emulation. When you do cdrecord -scanbus it should show only one
entry for your CD-RW !!!!!!!!

Have you put the following in /etc/modules.conf ?

alias   scd0 sr_mod                  # load sr_mod upon access of scd0
alias   scsi_hostadaptor ide-scsi    # SCSI host adaptor emulation
options ide-cd ignore=hdb            # if /dev/hdb is your CD-writer
