Hi Folks,
Want to run ppp over a leased line using DIALUP Modem? Here is the solution
(it's different from Leased Line HOWTO)
1. Leased line is different from dial up line as there is no voltage, dial
tone, busy tone etc. It is a simple pair of wire connected between two
locations.
2. Get two modem, Make/speed does not mater, but better if both are same
make and speed. Connect these modems to two linux box and Line input of one
modem to line input of second modem by a 2 core wire. I had a 100 meter
wire.
3. Fire minicom set the speed, data, parity etc same (use 57600 and above )
on both modem (using ctl+A+O option) and type "atd" on one machine and "ata"
on another machine. The modem will start communicating and after few
seconds, you will get connected message on both machine. Type some character
on one machine they should appear on second machine. If this OK then exit
minicom without RESET, i,e ctl+A+Q.
4. Type following on first machine
pppd -detach crtscts lock 10.0.0.1:10.0.02 /dev/ttyS1 57600
and on second machine,
pppd -detach crtscts lock 10.0.0.2:10.0.01 /dev/ttyS1 57600
Note the IP addresses and I have assumed that your modems are on /dev/ttyS1.
The pppd will hand shake and you will get the connected messages. Now your
link is up. Check it with ifconfig and route -n. You can test it by ping.
Run a FTP and check speed.
My results with FTP
file vmlinuz (binary) 800kb 233 seconds 3.3 kb /sec
file Termcap (text) 900kb 93 seconds. 9.1 kb /sec
IMPORTANT - I had kernel 2.4 and pppd 2.4 on both machine.
5. USAGE: Run linux router on both machine and you have Low cost WAN.
6. TODO : Test it with real leased line.
ENJOY!! The power Of Linux.
