Subject: [LIH] Problem in installing Red hat Linux 6.1

|Hi,
|
|Yesterday I tried installing Red hat Linux 6.1 (PC Quest distribution)
|
|My PC configuration is : PIII 800 MHz, 64MB RAM, 20 GB HDD as
| Primary Master, 52x CD drive as the
|Sec. Master
| 540 MB HDD as the secondary slave.
|
|Before starting the installation I disabled the Primary Master in the CMOS
|setup.
|(I didn't want to disturb the win98 on my new 20GB HDD !! I'm new to
|Linux:-(
|Selected the text installation option I chose English, PS/2 Mouse...
|
|I created the following partitions : (all on the "hdd" ie., secondary
|slave)
|            /boot   --> 16MB
|            Linux swap -->  64MB
|            /          -->  200MB (with the option to grow)
|
|
|Then I chose to write the LILO on the hdd boot record( 540MB HDD). When the
|installation started to

Do not install lilo. Use loadlin to boot

loadlin <your_kernel_image> root=/dev/<your_hd_partition>

Make boot disk while installing so that you can boot in to linux and copy
kernel image to your window drive, How ?

After booting to linux
mkdir /mnt/dos
mount /dev/<your_window_partition> /mnt/dos -t msdos
Then copy vmlinuz (around 700kb) to dos partition.

Hope this helps.
