Anybody out here who has got a similar problem?

I have an intel810 m/b. I had been using it with kernel 2.2.x and
XFree86 3.3.5+. with the help of the agpgart module and the XFCom-810
X server from intel.

Somedays back, i upgraded my kernel to 2.4.2 with agpgart support and
now X refuses to start saying "error ioctl(GARTIO .. something".

Nosing around the web, told me a horrible reason.
The AGPGart module from intel is *incompatible* with the AGPGart module
in kernel 2.4.x
And since the XFCom_810 X server(which is actually a hack of the
X-SVGA server 3.3.5 by the intel folks ) depends on XFree86-3.3.5 ,
you HAVE to upgrade XFree86 to 4.0+ to use the inbuilt 810 X server
with the new agpgart module.

And anybody who has ever got disgusted with Glibc-hell in
linux (reminding me sometimes about DLL-hell someplace else) knows how
difficult it is to upgrade just XFree86.

What should I do then? Would disabling apggart support in the kernel
and rebuilding the intel agpgart module itself help?

This older module might crash other new apps depending on the newer
agpgart ... aargh!

P.S. Those with Redhat 7.x and other newer dists wouldn't face this
problem . You probably already have XFree4.x on your systems.
