If you don't want the CD in ISO format, then you can probably do this:
tar zc <files> | cdrecord -v dev=0,0,0 speed=2 -data -
It'll write the raw tar.gz data to CD. You have to ensure that your
system is able to compress it faster than it gets written to the CD,
otherwise you'll get buffer underruns. Just try this out on a CDRW or
something. To get the data from it, I'm assuming you can dd the data
from the drive and then filter it through tar zx, though I've never
tried writing anything which is not in ISO format. Experimentation is
the key to success. :-)
