[LIH] Cheap and Best soundcard in linux?

Hi all,
   i am on the lookout for a cheap and good soundcard for linux. is there
any good card out there, having native support in linux dont want alsa based
card!
btw does quake run on alsa based cards, last time i checked out quake1(long
time back) on a alsa based card, it didnt work :-(
how about yamaha or create 16bit. ymf724??

looking for clues!
