If you are running on a single pc connected to a dialup, then put your ISP's
nameservers in resolv.conf

Why did you put it there? You are supposed to put it in .fetchmailrc - a line
like "poll pop.server with proto pop3 no dns"

> the error "unable to resolve canonical name for ..."
> comes only for certain ip addresses in our LAN.

So set up an internal dns server for your LAN. It's not rocket science - and
you can use Atul's dns/ rdns generating program (in the pcqupdt section of the
PCQ rh 6.2 cd) if you want to automate this process (it sets up dns and rdns
for an entire /24).
