Suresh Ramasubramanian spewed into the ether:

>I thought so too - till I came across Star Office, which installs itself in
>/opt, and got myself a /partition which was 98% full.
What I do is make separate partitions for writable directories.
/boot
/
/opt
/home
/usr
/usr/local
/var
/tmp
swp

root partition / with dev, bin, sbin, boot, etc can be ro and rest all other
/usr, /opt, /home, /var, /tmp, /root can be rw
BTW I have faced a small problem here.

If I make /dev as ro then syslogd and klogd does not start because they
write to /dev/log and /bin/login also fails to change the permission of
/dev/tty.
Any work around?
