My friend here has a problem and since he isn't a member of the list, I am
passing it on to you. The problem description is as below.

Dear Vilas,

I just write down some problem description I met yesterday. I think this
problem should be a bug of RedHat Linux 7.0 or RTLinux 3.0(final). I am just
not sure about it. Did you meet the same problem on your commuter without
RTLinux 3.0 installed? If this problem also occurred on your computer
without the RTLinux, that should be a problem of RedHat, but if not, I think
maybe the problem would come with RTLinux. Because as you see, the RTLinux
3.0 is still some bugs in it. Anyway, the followings are my problem
description:

When I login to the RedHat Linux 7.0 with RTLinux Kernel 3.0(final).
Everything looks OK. But I do not know at what time, the problem happens: I
can not reboot my computer even I login as root. And when I type in
"whoami", the following message shows:

"whoami: cannot find username for UID 4294967295".

Then, I can not restart my computer, I can not shut it down. When I try to
"reboot" or "shutdown" or use "Ctrl+Alt+Del" to restart my computer, I just
log out to the login screen. At the login screen, when I choose "restart" or
"halt", I just go back to the login screen without restart the computer. It
says only the superuser can restart the computer even-though I logged in as
root in the first place. So at last, I have to reset my computer.

After I restart it with cold restart, it can login, it can run, but things
becomes worse. First, as you see, when you login with the login screen, then
there will show a small window in the center of the screen, it shows the
current loading program, such as session, window manager, keyboard, mouse,
etc. I found that there exists a unknown icon. But I remember before the
problem happens, it should be a icon of "magicdev". And after I login,
everything looks OK again, but I do not know after how long a period of
time, I meet the same strange problem again. I can not reboot my computer
and have to reset it again. Then this time, in the startup process, there
are 3 unknown icon in it. The window manager is lost, I was told by the
Gnome Disk Guide that my window manager does not work well, something is
wrong with it. I lost the frame of any open window, I can not change the
size of them, I can not move it. So I have to change my window manager to
twm. I am so lucky, the twn works. When I try to change back to sawfish, I
can not, it always says that there is something wrong with it. So I think
there should be something wrong with sawfish, I download the
"sawfish-0.30.3-10.i386.rpm" from your website(RedHat) and reinstall
it(before I reinstall it, I have to uninstall it first). But the problem
still exists. At last, I give up. I backup all my data and reinstall the
whole system again. But yesterday morning, the problem came to my computer
again. It is just 4 days after I reinstall everything. I have to reinstall
everything again.

So dear sir, please tell me how to solve this problem, I do not want to
reinstall my computer again.

Thanks in advance
