Mutt invokes sendmail to send the mail. It is sendmail that is hanging,
not mutt. You can put the line set sendmail_wait=-1 in your ~/.muttrc to
tell mutt not to wait for sendmail to finish. Of course, your sendmail
problem will persist, which I think is because of DNS lookup problems.
And why do you have to reboot to get things working again???
