On the boot prompt of CD, type linux rescue. It would ask the keyboard
type, language etc.. then you will get the root prompt. There will be
some limited no. of commands available.
Your filesystem is not mounted yet. You can use fdisk to partition
your hard drive, or mount the partitions.
Here is an example. Suppose your windoze crashed and you had to
reinstall it. It would overwrite mbr and your lilo would be gone. You boot
using the CD into rescue mode. After getting the prompt you do the
following (supposing your / partition is /dev/hda2)
# mkdir /lin
# mount /dev/hda2 /lin
# cd /lin
# chroot /lin
# mount /proc
# lilo -v
Moreover you can mount all the remaining partitions too and start services
for a particular init mode and do most of your work.
