mostly you dont have to do a thing. They come with ghostscript, which i
guess you must be having. To check on what all drivers you have do a
gs -h
You may choose to include new drivers, in which case you have to recompile
gs from source together with these drivers. However printools do not refer
to any of the newer drivers, so as far as printools is concerned you
already have everything.
You can however get access to more bangs and whistles by incorporating
the newer drivers ( like for hp inkjets ) mainly better resloution/dithering
and support for economode etc.
In accordance to their policy of supporting linux, HP have comeout with
modifications to the normal lpr, printools and rhs-printfilters, which will
access to printer-specific features, which till now the win users had a
better access.
Now, lpr can use a library called libppd to actually insert specific
postcript instructions to the postscript file and then pass it on to gs.
These insertions are guided by the printers specification in the form of
ppd files, which are available from their site. And all this is now open
