In fact it should not.
What is the point in installing grub on top of Lilo ?
The output on my machine is :
-----------------------------------------------
debian:~/tmp# strings mbr.grub
LILO
D|f1
GRUB
Geom
Hard Disk
Read
Error
-----------------------------------------------
I don't know what the above mbr dump means.
But Grub works fine for me. I have installed grub on MBR using
grub-install /dev/hda
Have you created a dir /grub inside /boot ?
If not do it and copy all the files found inside /usr/share/grub/i386-pc
to /boot/grub. Copy the file menu.lst found inside /usr/share/doc/grub
also to /boot/grub and make the relevant changes. Have a look at the docs
for this.
Warm Regards
