nls = natural language support (character sets / codepages for lots of
languages)

Here's what you need in your config :

CONFIG_NLS=y
CONFIG_NLS_DEFAULT="cp437"
CONFIG_NLS_CODEPAGE_437=y

CONFIG_NLS_ISO8859_1=y

Comment out the rest of the rubbish (russian, greek, german etc etc) - just a
waste of disk space for us :)
