Hoping to call US, I finally got down to compiling ALSA. My Via chipset
card worked with the kernel, but i had to pipe it to a 2000 PMPO amplifier
with max volume to hear linus whispering ;)

The compile went of smooth, except for a small typo which was there in a
source file. So alsa is rocking now.

I can play cds fine but
However the midi-player isnt working (not that I mind too much).
Xplamidi/playmidi complains: unable to open /dev/sequencer...no such file.
But the fact is it does exist as a char-major device. The sequencer
related modules are also loaded ( quite a few actually some 3~4 )

snd-sequencer
alsa's sequencer
snd-oss-sequencer etc etc

wonder why play-midi cant open the file. Infact the permissions to
/dev/sequencer are also read-write to user which is me ( or any-one who
logs in )

Should i be using the alsa's sequencer device which is /dev/snd/seq.
However xplaymidi/playmidi doesnt seem to have an option to specify the
device. One can link /dev/sequencer to it though ( i can save the original
with some other name ) but havent tried that yet.

p.s. It would be good to have a better module loading method than the
monolithic conf.modules. With lots of aliases it soon becomes difficult to
read.
