Actually, thank god there's a detailed FAQ for most MTAs around (the exim FAQ
runs to a couple of hundred kb or so) - mail spool permissions are right up
there among the top 5 faqs in most of the FAQs :)

Oh by the way, if the permissions changed suddenly without your touching them,
make sure that whatever automatic setup tool you have on your system
(linuxconf, yast, whatever) dont touch mail configuration.
