[LIH] frame buffers

Has any one tried frame buffers?
I get standard text resolution when I put vga=ask in loadlin.
My kernel (2.4)  does not have frame buffers support built in.
How do I use frame buffer and see that tux logo at boot up without compiling
the kernel.
