a) "The Cathedral and the Bazaar" is a writeup by Eric Raymond
http://tuxedo.org/~esr/writings/cathedral-bazaar/
which explains certain evolutions in the progress/development of computing
history.
b) Similarly, you must take time out to read up
http://www.fsf.org
which will explain what Open Source (or Free) Software is.
c) The Solaris OS and its documentation is available either on CD (you need
to order it from SUN directly) or via their website http://www.sun.com.
Please register and you can then download and burn your own CDs (separate ones
for documentation).
d) I am trying to get you to understand/appreciate the usefulness of using a
free/open source OS (Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, etc). The documents
listed in a) and b) will help you get started to think/act/move in a
particular direction. I am not competent to explain the merits/demerits of
using a proprietary OS but experience over the years tells me that using Linux
properly helps a lot of applications in the real world and at a cost which is
affordable by just about everybody on this planet. Additionally the Open
Source Movement will propel computing towards the masses [again read up on the
internet] and maybe (who knows, but I ain't an astrologer!) change our
lifestyle altogether.
