OK ... so if your mail id is ajay, create a login by name ajay and run
fetchmail from that login

For sending out mails, that shouldn't be a hassle at all. What,
specifically, is the error you are getting?
For smarthost setups, configure sendmail using the sendmail.mc at
http://www.hserus.net/sendmail.html (lose the confCON_EXPENSIVE flag ... the
rest should be ok)
Then configure dns (at least a resolv.conf pointing to your lan dns server)
on your local linux box
If mail still doesnt go out, post some error messages / logs
