Hi,

Last few weeks, I was out of list. Hence, I don't know, whether anyone
posted anything on Mandrake8 or not.

Currently, I am using the downloaded (iso-image) Mandrake8. In a word,
it is coolest distro specially for the desktop usage. It includes
gnome-1.4.x and KDE2.1.1 and all other goodies including evolution and
Nautilus. The kernel is the latest 2.4.3.

The best thing I have found are --
   1. Excellent hardware detection (previously, I had to configure the
pcmcia hw [corega etherII] and the embadded soundcard for my laptop --
but now, installer takes care of them)
   2. Good framebuffer mode support. (including flushy Mandrake logo in
kernel bootup) ... If the fb video card is supported natively, then the
user will not see any kinda kernel message during boot. (though this is
very easy to do .. but still, I liked it). The aurora is also customised
proparly.
   3. Mandrake optimisation of KDE2.1.1 (though in the Mandrake8 beta,
the enhance-icon behaviour was included, but in the final release, it is
absent)
   4. Mozilla0.8 is included in the distro, but the mozilla-mail support
is not there.
   5. gcc version is 2.96-0.48
   6. glibc version is 2.2.2

And the otherthings are as good as it can be!!!!

BTW, The installer screen is bit changed. While pkg installation is
going on, It is now showing nice pics abt the product. On clicking the
details button, it shows the details of the packages. But, personally, I
liked the installation of the beta version as it was showing the pics of
the ppl of the Mandrake devel team. :)

So, lots more to explore ..... and enjoy
