I'm sure you must have a lot of pointers on this but thought i'll too add my
two pence. So here goes : My guess is that you are running in runlevel 5 by
default, i.e. X starts automatically and xdm or kdm does the login.
1.     Press ctrl+alt+1 to switch to the virtual terminal 1 and give the
command telinit 3 to switch to normal console mode terminal. this will shut
down X. then give the commands to update kde
2.    press ctrl+alt+backspace. this will kill X forcefully and then give
the commands to upgrade kde. not sure wether this will work. the above
should work.
