U can get rid of the NT server and configure SAMBA to take on the NT
server's role

So basically u have to decide which services you need. Yes you can make
Linux / NT dual boot

I think u seem to have some basics mixed up. If you install two operating
systems on a machine, you can only boot into any one and only applications
specific to that opearating system will be available at a time. It would be
better if you specify what functions do you wish your server to perform and
a suitable answer with respect to Linux OS capabilities will be posted.

Linux as an OS has networking built into it groundup ( remember Linux was
developed over the internet, therefore, the networking capabilities of linux
are excellent).
There are many books aimed at different levels. State your level and a
suitable title will be suggested.
