what messages do you get about the v4l stuff during startup ?

Anyways I don't think v4l devices work too good when compiled into the
kernel... modules are better.(you can always unload and reload them with
different options if things go bad!! ;-)

did you read /usr/src/linux/Documentation/video4linux/bttv ??

you also need to enable i2c bus support for most of these multifunction
cards/devices!
