It happened to me too. Few days back, something wrong happened
to my inbox at Dishnet DSL's server. Fetchmail always said the box
is corrupt and non readable. Dishnet's support also had never encountered
such a problem, and they just said they will try to set it right, but they
never did. (Mebbe, they never knew what's wrong).
After two weeks of frustration, I read in an L.G issue about doing
those SMTP commands manually. Hence what I did was,
     # telnet pop3.eth.net 110
This put me in a '>' prompt. then you should type
             > user <your_usr_name>
it will accept and will wait for pwd.
                 > password <your_password>
this will accept you in. Again,
                 > stat
will show you the no.of mails there.
             > list
will list them all with sizes.
            > dele 1
will delete first mail. Do this manually for
all mails. Or you may retrieve with 'retr' command.
After I had deleted all those mails, the inbox seemed to work right.
I was able to use fetchmail thereafter. Now happy.
Hope this helps. Try it. Should work. Worked for me. :-)

The MORAL: - Don't use Microsoft Windows on mission critical servers.
Dishnet's using NT, and their mail server is one of the worst.
It takes a lot of time(even 24 hrs) to deliver mails at times.
