Hi Sandip,
Re: FAQ's about Mailman-managed Mailing Lists.
This is asked often enough, so replying to the list(s). Adding a
couple of Q&A'a of my own.
Q1. Can I post to the list from multiple addresses while receiving
only on copy of messages?
A1. You should subscribe both (all) addresses to the mailing list,
and using your mailing list options page switch off mail delivery to
all but one of those addresses. Then you will be able to post from
all the addresses while receiving only one copy of messages.
Q2. Can I have the same password for all my mailing list
subscriptions?
A2. Yes, you can use a single password to manage your mailing list
options on all lists: just go to the options page for each list and
enter the new password :-) Voila! One password for all lists!
Q3. But how do I get/change my mailing list password in the first
place?
A3. Two parts to the question (and hence the answer):
(a) To get your current password, go to:
http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/name-of-mailing-list/
(e.g. http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/linux-india-help/)
Enter your e-mail address in the last textbox on the page (the one
before the ``Edit Options'' button) and click on Edit Options, which
will take you to the List Configuration page. Click on the ``Email My
Password To Me'' button and your password will be mailed to you.
In any case, your password is mailed to you once a month by the
Mailing List Manager.
(b) To change your password, use the same List Configuration page and
enter the old and new passwords in the spaces provided, and click on
``Change My Password''.
Q4. How the *!*@*! do I unsubscribe from the list?
A4. Get your password using the method described in A3(a) above if
you don't have it already. Go to the List Configuration page as
described in A3(a), enter your password into the ``Password'' field
and click on ``Unsubscribe''. There, that were simple, weren't it?
Q5. I still can't unsubscribe, my mailbox floweth over and my ISP
chargeth me huge amounts of money for disk space! What do I do now?
A5. As a last resort, send mail to the List Admin requesting for
her/his help in unsubscribing. Please note that (a) Admins are busy
people by definition, and (b) Admins will not unsubscribe you without
verifying that you actually own the address you wish unsubscribed.
In practical terms, what this means is that you may have to wait for a
while before you get a response from the Admin which may be as simple
as, ``Go to the List Configuration page and unsubscribe yourself,
dummy!''. However, if you persist in nagging the Admin often enough,
and especially if you get pizzas delivered to her/his door, you may
eventually succeed in raising one from her/his lethargy and getting
your work done. The Admin will definitely send a query message to the
address you wish to unsubscribe to confirm that the owner of the
address does actually want the action executed.
Q6. I'm subscribed to the list but I can't post: all my messages come
back to me with a message like ``Referred to admin, non-members are
not allowed to post''. Why?
A6. You must post from the address you subscribed to the list. If
you wish to be able to post from multiple e-mail addresses, please see
the answer to Q1 above.
Q7. I'm subscribed to the list but I can't post: all my messages come
back to me with a message like ``Referred to admin, suspicious header
in e-mail''. Why?
A6. Mailman is pretty strict about what sort of MIME-encoded messages
get onto the list by default. Specifically, your message will not be
posted if it contains any of the following MIME types:
- Multipart/alternative
- text/html
- ms-tnef (eeeek!)
- Binaries
Please refrain from posting HTML, messages containing binaries and
messages containing the MS-tnef abominations to the list. If you
persist in doing so, the Admins may get mad at you, and let me assure
you, there's nothing so Evil as a mad Mailing List Admin. You Have
Been Warned!
Corollary: Messages containing text/vcard parts will also get held up
for approval. Please avoid sending vcards to the list in each
message: once is enough.
Regards,
