Since you are on a 6.2, I think there's no problem upgrading to
2.2.16. Find the .rpm from rpmfind.net, download it and do
rpm -ivh ..2.2.16.rpm.
I hope that works without any hitches. It worked for me.
Then, for sound, insmod the i810_audio.o module inside
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc. Find it there.
If it is there, do insmod -f <path_to>/i810_audio.o.
then, you should be able to play the mp3s and audio CDs. It played for
me. sndconfig won't help. you will have to manually insert the modules.
That is what I did, when I was under RH6.2. It worked for me. Any problems,
post them. :-)
