the correct device to use would be /dev/ttySx (/dev/cuax is deprecated)

where x will be a number corresponding to your comport.... 

all winmodems don't work with linux... only linmodems will.... once you
get your modem driver up and running it shouldn't be a problem figuring
out which port it'll be using!
