[LIH] sound problem

I have Rh 6.2 with kernel 2.4.1 and X 4.0.2 in Gnome. I don't get sound
working when I enter gnome. After just opening audio mixer program, get
sound. I am having alsa drivers working. why it happens? How to correct
it?
