By the way sreangsy I just noticed in the options of timidity that it also has an
excellent gtk based front end too. 

timidity -ig 

gives the nice front end. kmidi is crap compared to timidity. No jerks etc. with
timidity while other stuff is going on the PC. Sound is also good.
