Looks like the original was swallowed by sourceforge
Also I forgot, tnsnames.ora on the client machine should list the remote
oracle server as a valid service.
Oracle services can operate over a variety of protocols so IMHO platform
on which Oracle is hosted does not make a difference.

Nerver tried it with JSP/Servelet but with PHP on windows and Oracle
correctly configured on my Linux server conncetion was no problem.
Yes, having a DNS on linux server will help.
