RDBMS question is tough to answer. There are several factors to consider
ie., what kind of application do you want to run.
Oracle is not really an obvious choice as people seem to think.
I would suggest that you also have a look at postgresql
(www.postgresql.org).
It's quite decent and the best of all it's free.
It's got very active newsgroups (like Linux) and hence good support.

But if you are really doing heavy duty stuff then Oracle may be a safer bet.
