Squid is better, of course. The amount of configuration options with
squid is unmatched. Also, full logs of websites visited (there are
squid log parsers available on freshmeat.net), ad blocking
capabilities, authenticated browsing, PAM support, FTP support, ACL
based configuration, caching...
But you ought to firewall out unproxied HTTP requests, using
ipchains/whatever.

It is always better to run your own DNS server. Mainly because of
caching. You can also have a local domain and a resolver. But some
precautions are necessary - keep up to date with your distribution's
security updates. Also, allow only the LAN users access to port 53.
