The big problem with gcc is the multiple places it is broken in the
RedHat distribution. Removing the egcs package wont help in itself. I
believe the bigger culprit is libstdc++ and who knows where else the
whole thing is broken.. As I figured out today it is best not to go for
anything above 6.2 for any production level servers. If you stick to
just RedHat distributed rpms for your software needs then 7.1 is ok but
definitely stay away from 7.0.
