as I said try the _vesa _ driver instead of _sis_ in XFree4.03 config .
use the line Driver "vesa".
it works fine for sis cards and all vesa cards, with some acceleration too.
or better get an old format config file and copy it to /etc/X11.
the config program in mandrake is XFdrake.u can try that also.
if probing hangs the system.disable it in the init scripts.also disable stuff
like hdd autoprobe etc boot in the failsafe option of lilo.

I have sis 6215 card. While
installing as I said earlier it starts in
graphics mode. Install continues in graphics mode. It says it has
configured X and asks whether start to in graphics after reboot. If I
say yes then after rebooting it hangs superprobing serial port 2f8.
If I say no for graphical rebooting, still it comes to console and
hangs. If I go to another console check it shows x as 3.3.6. But if I
run xf86configure, I get a XF86Config file corresponding to X 4( I mean
it creates section input device instead of keyboard)and gives error
message when X is started. As I am not given option screen, I can select
only Xfree 3.3.6. If I can then fbdev option can be used in XF86Config.
Any solution to break this lock welcome.
