I too had faced the same problem in RHL 7.1 with 32
MB RAM it would give message annaconda could'nt find
enough memory and then go into text mode install.The
problem it seems is caused by the way the new XFree4.x
works I feel. The same problem does not occur with
64MB+ of RAM.
I have installed more RAM in my m/c and could
get the graphical install (on i810).

I have an i810 motherboard with onboard video and 4MB
VRAM, and I have
32MB system RAM.
I am sure about the 32MB part but not about the 4MB
VRAM as I do not
know how i810 motherboards
access video memory. Someone told me that there is no
VRAM on i810. A
part of system memory is used as VRAM. I am a bit of a
novice in these
hardware areas. So, somebody, please clarify.
Now, on to the weird part.
Till yesterday, I had Red Hat 6.2 ( PCQ version ) on
2.2.16 kernel and
XF86-3.3.6 . Then, X used to start properly if I used
xf86config to
tell
X that I had 4096KB VRAM. After X started, I used top
and it showed me
that my system had 25MB RAM. Sp, I assumed this :-
25MB + 4MB + ( 3MB for kernel et al.) = 32 MB
Now, I have Mandrake 8.0 on kernel 2.4.3 and
XF86-4.0.x.
At first , from my Red hat experience, I had used
xf86config to tell X
about the 4096KB VRAM. But , to my surprise, X did not
start and it
told
that only 3086KB VRAM was available ! ( It also told
me something like
:-
less than 6MB AGP memory available. Cannot proceed. )
I changed /etc/X11/XF86Config accordingly and X
started normally.
Under X, in an xterm, I fired up top and it showed
that my system had
about 28MB RAM.
So, here I go into assumption mode again :
28MB + 3MB(VRAM) + (1MB for kernel et al ) = 32MB
( During installation, both Red Hat and Mandrake had
detected 32MB RAM.
)
Can anyone please explain why is this anomaly ??
