This happens because of two reasons.
1)Your BIOS battery has gone low and can not hold the settings and time changes
2)Whenever linux boots/shutdown, it syncs system time with hardware. If your
BIOS behaves well, you won't notice any change. Otherwise you will see what you
call 'a change I haven't made'.(Noticed that message in the shutdown screen
today....;-)
Check CMOS battery and if you have doze, check whether this happens with that
too. DOes the time change has some pattern like the date always goes back to
1970 etc...?
