sorry for the belated reply. the article described a
method in which the cracker penetrates a computer,
plants a scanner in it and uses it from there. when i
found that entry about nmap, i was afraid if something
similar had happened to my machine. and we had a
leased line connection in our office, which i was
using with linux. a high-speed connection and a
"luser" - perfect for a cracker!
