Oh my ... my ... isn't that a disaster!
The worst perhaps is manually fingering
with /var/lib/dpkg/info entries,  since 
all install and deinstall scripts would 
be removed !

Don't know if  anyone had ever heard of
such a disaster. Your best bet would be
to  post it to  debian-user group where
there  are a lot of Gurus, inclusive of
the package maintainers :

In case you are not subscribed, ask for
a cc of the post to you.

PS: Give dselect a try ... usually works
where apt fails !!! Just a hunch though.
