IIRC, $mbox_type is used only when creating a new folder. Otherwise,
mutt detects the type of a given mail folder on the fly - if it is a
file with emails separated by the "From " line, then it is mbox
format, if it is a directory with a .mh_sequence file (the file itself
is not used ever, I believe) then mh format and if it is a directory
with the subdirectories new, cur and tmp, then it is maildir.
