Actually Linux doesn't hang. only the process hangs. in your case, the
X server. When in X,
if it hangs, try Ctrl + alt + bkspace to return to terminal from where
X was started. Else
try Ctrl + alt + F<1 to 7> to get to a virtual console. from there you
can kill X using
kill cmd.
