I think you should have the sources properly installed in
/usr/src/linux for the
compilation to succeed. After unzippping the tar ball inside /usr/src,
link it to /usr/src/linux.
You will have to compile the sources there and do make modules, make
modules_install to
get the modversions.h. Hope this helps. Listers correct me if I am
wrong here.
