2.4.9, with the appropriate patch.
Since the problem occured with the default kernel also (on ext2), I
think its a squid/kernel/libc bug.
Shanu had said something about xfs causing problems on a x series
machine being reported on the XFS list as well. You might want to look
at that.
But XFS has performed better than Reiserfs in this case (reiser killed
the box, xfs had the machine surviving).
JFS is still too new in Linux for major problems to have been caught.
And ext3 is too slow for mail servers.
XFS looks like your best bet.
