I am not on RH. However, it is apparant that there has been an
error in loading python modules,  on which the installation is
based. Maybe a CD corruption.

See if you can install in non-GUI mode, and if successful, try
to install python seperately later ...

Sub : Kernel compilation steps (Debian)              LOST #088

1. #cd /usr/src/linux  2. #make-kpkg clean 3. #make menuconfig
4. #make-kpkg --revision=<put here revision no.>  kernel-image
After compilation is over you  will get a deb file in /usr/src 
with all modules you had selected during make menuconfig.
Install the kernel using dpkg -i <deb file name>

Change /etc/lilo.conf and than run lilo -v
For detailed explanation man make-kpkg
