There has been a lot of responses which stated that it is only
a .tar.gz tarball, but no one explained why ... I am just on a
2c contribution game here :)

In the early days of Linux, the world was on mainly M$ systems
and BBSs (remember CIX ?) ... These did not support  long file
names. To enable tx across M$ floppies and BBS networks,  .tgz
was used for abbreviation. FYI, this existed before the  birth
of both .rpm and .deb ... In todays context,  it perhaps lacks
relevance but is still used by Slackware and  other .tgz based
distros which still accounts for 30% of the Linux users around
the world !
