Try this:
rpm --query NVIDIA_kernel
When you use --query in rpm, you specify only the package name, and not it's
version number and other details.
> [root@illusion /rpms]# rpm -ivh NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-1251.rh71up.i386.rpm
> Preparing... ###########################################
> [100%] package NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-1251.rh71up is already installed
That's normal behaviour since the package is already installed.
