It also depends on the scale of the thing ... if I'm configuring a
server that will support several hundred .. several thousand users,
there are several dozen things I have to set up ... I can't just do a
kitchen sink install of redhat and leave it at that.
There's likely to be a lot of custom configuration of sendmail,
initscripts, various services etc.
Then there's the hassle of patching and securing the box - it is a good
idea to do this even if you are setting up something on a dialup
connected "newbie special" but it is not all that essential.
On the other hand, if I'm configuring linux for any of my friends, a
perfectly simple install is more than ok for them - and will take me
hardly 20 minutes, not a week to ten days.
