Install it - it is yet another module - no harm done at all.  If it is redhat
/ mandrake you're using there's even an rpm which you just have to install
(and possibly add the appropriate entries in httpd.conf)

Here's my apache setup --

> Apache/1.3.20 (Unix) mod_perl/1.26 PHP/4.0.6 mod_ssl/2.8.4
> OpenSSL/0.9.6
