What spikes? Power spikes or strips of colours? What's your display card? What's 
the monitor?

To change  the resolution, login as root and run setup(Use console mode only) 
Choose X configuration and reconfigure the X. You should choose one display mode 
like 1024X768 only. As a guideline for 15"/14" monitors use 1024x768. For bigger 
monitors you can choose 1240x1024.

KDE screen capture has a facility to grab active window only. Also take a look 
at KDE control panel->LoonFeel->Key bindings. You will find ctl+PrintScreen and 
Alt+PrintScreen mirrored to something useful.

And would you mind setting some wordwrap in your mail. It's absoultely unreadable.
