Your subject says how to have KDE not GNOME.
KDE login screen is given by KDM.
To get it put a line in /etc/sysconfig/desktop
DESKTOP=KDE
That should start kdm.
For reasons see /etc/inittab and /etc/X11/prefdm which is referred by the 
former.
